GCK BILSTEIN BACK ON RACE PACE AT ROUND 7 OF THE FIA WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP
GCK Bilstein’s race weekend in Barcelona kicked off with a promising 4th fastest time in free practice of Round 7 of the FIA World Rallycross Championship as the early morning Spanish sun started to heat up the track.
Anton Marklund’s first qualifier of the weekend on the famous Circuit de Catalunya saw Marklund take on Karai, Timerzyanov and Mandie August. Following a battle off the start line, Marklund took a strategic joker straight away, overtaking August in lap two to chase down the rest of the pack. Picking up the pace over the remaining laps, Anton took the win from Timerzyanov with a strong 3rd fastest time overall.
Huge contact off the start line of his 2nd qualifier squeezed Marklund into p4 into turn 2, from where he jokered straight away behind Timerzyanov to finish in p3 and p4 overall.
Q3 for GCK Bilstein saw Anton line up on pole alongside Gronholm, Ide and Bennett. Putting down a fight for position with Gronholm but lacking desired grip, Marklund finished the race in p2 with a 10th fastest time overall putting the Swede in p8 and the 2nd row of the semi-finals.
Following a massive battle with Larsson into turn 1 and 2, which Marklund won to push into p4, Anton jokered straight away but was overtaken by Gronholm and dropped into p5. Anton managed to get ahead of Larsson again when the fellow Swede jokered to finish in 4th, just missing out on a spot in the final.
P4 IN SEMI-FINAL 2
P3 in Q1 / P9 in Q2 / P10 in Q3
“I really like this track in Barcelona and we’ve had some good, additional prep time ahead of this weekend. Bilstein have put in a new evolution of the damper since the last round and this hard work has really paid off, the car feels great which I think we proved with our practice time and the p3 in Q1. Q2 and Q3 were more of a struggle with significant impact in Q2 and some miscalculations in Q3, which had us miss out on the first row of the semi-finals. The car felt fantastic again in the semi-finals and we just missed out on a spot in the final having got stuck in a little bit of traffic. P4 today feels great though because I can really feel the potential of the car for tomorrow now.”, Marklund commented.
