FIA WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP
RD3: KOUVOLA RX - FINLAND
GCK Bilstein’s first Finnish round finishes following the semi-finals
Having shown off his GCK Megane R.S. RX’ dangerously quick pace at round 1 and 2 of the Championship in Sweden last week, GCK Bilstein driver Anton Marklund put down competitive laps but struggled with engine issues throughout the day, which ended up seeing him finish his race day earlier than expected in the semi-finals.
Following free practice, which saw Marklund put down impressive pace posting the 2nd fastest time, Anton struggled with a slow start to the 1st qualifier due to a lack of power. He dropped into 3rd, jokered in lap 2 to come out ahead of Paasonen and crossed the finish line in 2nd, having put down the 2nd fastest lap overall of the qualifier, and shown off the pace of the GCK Megane R.S. RX when let loose.
Marklund’s fighting spirit and racing ability shone through in the 2nd qualifier as he battled his way through the pack to cross the finish line in first, despite traffic slowing him down initially.
While Marklund continued to put down some strong racing in his 3rd qualifier fighting his way back from p4 to catch up with the pack and race for a top 5 time, the last lap saw his engine troubles return causing him to lose all power and to idle across the finish line.
Despite the issues, Marklund made it to the semi-finals in p11. However, unable to fix the engine in the short time between races, Marklund retired from the semi-final in lap 2, finishing round 3 of the Championship in p12 overall.
Q1 P11 / Q2 P9 / Q3 P16
“It’s the end of round 3 here for us in Finland. We made it through to the semi-finals despite struggling with engine issues all day, with a problem around oil pressure resulting in low power for us throughout. There was no time to change the engine in between races, so we just tried to survive but unfortunately by Q3 the engine had had enough and we limped across the finish line but with a semi-final spot. The semi-final was just about getting over the line to collect some points and now the team is hard at work getting engine-ready for round 4 tomorrow, where we hope to be able to show off our pace on this super fun track with a bit more power and consistency.”, Marklund commented.
